PARSIPPANY, N.J.Resveratrol improved cardiovascular functioning in a recent study conducted using DSMs resVida® resveratrol (Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis. 2010 Jul 29). Australian Researchers found the ingredient is effective in improving flow mediated dilation (FMD) in humans in a dose-dependent manner. FMD is a bio-marker linked to the healthy functioning of the cardiovascular system.

FMD is a biomarker of endothelial function and cardiovascular health. Impaired FMD is associated with several cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension and obesity. Various food ingredients such as polyphenols have been shown to improve FMD.

In this double blind placebo controlled trial, 19 overweight/obese (BMI 25 to 35) (14 men and 5 post-menopausal women) subjects with untreated borderline hypertension (with a systolic blood pressure of 130 to 160 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure of 85 to 100 mmHg) consumed three doses of resveratrol (resVida 99 percent trans-resveratrol 30, 90 and 270 mg) and a placebo at weekly intervals. One hour after consumption of the supplement, plasma resveratrol and FMD were measured.

Researchers, led by  Dr. Peter Howe at the University of South Australia, found a significant dose effect of resveratrol on plasma resveratrol concentration (P < 0.001) and on FMD (P < 0.01), which increased from 4.1 ± 0.8 percent (placebo) to 7.7 ± 1.5 percent after 270 mg resveratrol. The diameter of the artery was increased by 62 percent in the group who took 30mg of resVida®, while a 91-percent improvement was seen in the 270mg group. FMD was also linearly related to plasma resveratrol concentration (P < 0.01).

DSM is now involved with five ongoing human studies for resVida®, and that list grows with each passing month," global business manager, Frank DeJianne stated. Were working with top researchers from around the world in the areas of cardiovascular health, metabolism, cognitive and physical performance. Our customers demand and recognize the value of our role in pioneering resveratrol research," DeJianne said.

DSMs resVida® is a 99-percent pure, nature-identical form of trans-resveratrol, the active component of red wine associated with a number of health benefits, including potent antioxidant and promoter of cardiovascular health. resVida® has self-affirmed GRAS status and is ideal for use in dietary supplements and a wide variety of foods and beverages.
