The Great Sugar Debate

NEW YORKThe great sugar debate is making headlines again. Yesterday, the New York Times magazine ran a 6,000-word piece written by head science writer Gary Taubes that dove into the proverbial sugar bowl to determine if sugar is a toxin" or poison" as some researchers have asserted.

The article is fashioned around a lengthy YouTube lecture conducted by Robert H. Lustig, an obesity expert at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine and vocal opponent of sugar. Lustig asserts excessive consumption of sugar is a driving factor behind the incidents of obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and other chronic ailments in America.

Taubes takes the reader through an in-depth course on sucrose, glucose, fructose and high-fructose corn syrup as well as additional studies to determine if sugar is possibly as bad as Lustig asserts.
