SILVER SPRING, Md.The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) released a products liability insurance guide for manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements. The document, Primer on Products Liability Insurance for the Dietary Supplement Industry, provides answers to some of the most commonly asked questions, such as:

  • What insurance coverage is included in a basic products liability insurance policy, and what are the limits of coverage?

  • What is the minimum premium cost for products liability insurance for a small company?

  • Are product labels required to be submitted to obtain products liability insurance?

  • Can insurance be obtained for products that contain excluded ingredients?

AHPA also established the AHPA Products Liability Insurance Program in cooperation with Grifcon Enterprises Inc.; the program managers; and R-T Specialty LLC, Chicago, an E&S insurance wholesale broker. Aside from the high likelihood of cost savings, and a reduction of time-consuming issues with items such as exclusions, one of the key attributes of the AHPA Program is its flexibility: participantsAHPA members and non-members alikecan maintain their current insurance agent or broker relationship, while gaining access to the expertise and experience represented by these program partners, by requesting brokers place their policy through R-T Specialty LLC.

"Both the primer and this innovative insurance partnership address an ongoing need on the part of the herbal and dietary supplements industry," stated Michael McGuffin, president of AHPA. "AHPA is fortunate to be working with experts who understand the coverage needs of manufacturers and distributors of these products."

Dick Griffin of Grifcon Enterprises echoed McGuffin's sentiments, adding, "We congratulate AHPA for taking the lead on product liability insurance issues by broadly sharing its expertise and joining us in developing this exciting program."
