Steven Dentali, Ph.D., will serve as the chair of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Dietary Supplement Nomenclature Joint Subcommittee. Dentali is the chief science officer for the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA).

The subcommittee is made up of current members of USP expert committees, the scientific decision-making bodies for USP. Dentali will advise on naming articles of botanical origin and will provide expert opinion on supplement/botanical nomenclature. Dentali is an industry expert, and in May he presented the "3x3" approach to describe botanicals from their raw material stage to finished products at the 2012 International Academic Conference on phytopharmaceutical analysis.

"It's a distinct honor to chair this group in order to help USP establish names for botanicals, related products, and other dietary supplement ingredients regardless of origin," Dentali said. "USP's recognition of the need for attention to botanical and dietary supplement ingredient nomenclature is another welcome step in its continued attention to standards for dietary supplements."
