SCOTTS VALLEY, CAThe American Herbal Pharmacopoeia (AHP) announced monograph standards for Aloe vera leaf, leaf juice and inner leaf juice. The standards establish authenticity, purity and quality control for the monographed botanical, ensuring good manufacturing process (GMP) compliance for these ingredients.

The monographs for Aloe vera leaf juice and Aloe vera inner leaf juice are the first of their kind, despite the widespread popularity of the traditional aloe plant. In recent years, the leaf juice, or whole leaf extract, and inner leaf juice, known as "gel," have gained more attention, prompting their new monographs in the name of safety.

I am ecstatic that AHP is the first pharmacopoeial standard developed for Aloe vera leaf and inner leaf juice as these are important herbal products worldwide," said Roy Upton, AHP executive director. "I am also happy that we can clarify the distinctions between the high-aloin-containing products for which safety concerns have been noted and help establish the standards for ensuring the identity, purity, quality, and safety of aloe juice products."
