In a nod to America’s appetite for hot and spicy foods, Heinz rolled out its new Heinz Ketchup Blended with Sriracha Flavor that combines the classic taste of its ketchup with the added kick from spicy chile pepper and garlic flavors.
The flavor comes in a 14-ounce plastic squeeze bottle featuring a green and red label. It joins a line of flavored ketchups including Heinz Tomato Ketchup Blended with Real Jalapeno, Heinz Tomato Ketchup Blended with Balsamic Vinegar and Heinz Hot & Spicy Ketchup Blended with Tabasco® Brand Pepper Sauce.
Joseph Giallanella, brand manager of Heinz Tomato Ketchup, said the new flavor was launched to answer consumer requests for another bold take on their favorite condiment. The company is touting the Sriracha-flavored ketchup as a perfect complement to cheeseburgers, French fries and hot dogs, and is the perfect flavor boost for chicken and eggs.
The popularity of ethnic foods among U.S. consumers has been on the upswing, and now, more than ever, Americans are exploring these bolder flavors and more culturally diverse foods.
According to Technomic, 37 percent of consumers are increasingly driven to try more exciting and innovative flavors. And there is an increased demand for spicy flavors—54 percent of consumers prefer hot or spicy sauces, dips or condiments compared to 48 percent in 2011.
The uptick in demand for spicy foods can be attributed to the increased popularity of ethnic cuisine, driven by growing global influence in the United States, as well as evolving consumer preferences.
Personally, I am stoked about the new Sriracha-flavored ketchup as it combines two of my favorite condiments and will save me time mixing the two together. Hopefully one of the big mayo companies will follow Heinz’ lead. If you haven’t mixed to two together, you really need to try it as it takes chicken salad to an entirely new level at my house.
