As soon as I posted my last entry, I knew something was wrong.

Here I am, a journalist, and I had just written something loaded with unanswered questions. I had no idea why someone would buy a vegetarian or organic supplement, so I just dismissed the notion. It was an unanswerable question, like the dinosaurs' extinction or why Argo won Best Picture.

I posted a request for knowledge on Facebook and within hours I was connected with Lisa Shapiro, a vegan consumer and the owner of All Things Vegan, a sales and marketing consulting firm for vegan businesses in the natural products industry.

In an email, Lisa detailed her reasons for seeking a vegetarian supplement, which is listed below. Rebuttals and debate are most welcome, of course.

Having vegetarian supplements is a very large concern for the consumer who cares about their health, the planet, and animals.

With all the concerns and worries about what animals are fed, and can possibly contain, the segment of the population concerned with taking non-animal supplements is growing. And gelatin, a common ingredient in capsules is made of skin, cartilage, and bones.Who wants that in a supplement that is supposed to enhance their health?

Are there enough selections? It could always be better, but companies like Mega Food, Solgar, and Deva are just some that cater to the vegetarian/vegan/health concerned community by properly labeling their supplements Vegan and containing no animal ingredients.

As more and more people become aware of what actually goes into animal ingredients, that segment will continue to grow.
