Most New Yorkers Support Soda Tax

NEW YORKSeventy-six percent of New York voters favor of a proposed tax on sugary soft drinks to help balance the New York City budget, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University, up 47 percent from a similar survey conducted two weeks earlier.

Eighty-four percent of voters also said the law requiring fast-food restaurants to post calorie information is useful, again with strong support from all groups. The survey found that 79 percent of respondents think that government involvement in such food issues is useful rather than meddling.

Seventy-seven percent of voters also said Mayor Michael Bloombergs administration is correct to encourage restaurants to use less salt.
