NAPLES, Fla.Pyure Brands introduced an organic and non-GMO erythritol as an alternative to sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners for use in commercial applications. The product will be unveiled at Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore, Sept. 26-28.

The new erythritol is both USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified, allowing manufacturers looking to produce organic and non-GMO product designations to utilize the erythritol sweetener without worry of non-compliance.

In order to ensure that the product would meet regulatory standards, Pyure Brands invested in extensive DNA testing during all phases of production. The results were shared with the Non-GMO Project, who then granted "verified" designation.

Erythritol is close to sugar in terms of bulk, so it can be used to replicate the familiar mouthfeel of foods and drinks that are sweetened with sugar. Erythritol works well in conjunction with stevia, acting as a bulking agent for the higher intensity sweetener.

Studies have shown too much sugar can cause a variety of health issues, including increased risk of heart failure and obesity. While artificial sweeteners can be useful in lowering the sugar content of beverages and foods, the recent push toward healthy, natural ingredients has given them a bad rap with consumers. For this reason, consumers have jumped at the options for natural, low-calorie sweeteners, like stevia, which saw a 400% increase in product launches between 2008 and 2012.
