DSHEA Documentary
October 27, 2015
Manufacturers, distributors and marketers of supplements are aware that supplements are regulated by the federal government; that dietary supplements have a place in supporting a healthy lifestyle; and that responsible companies adhere to the law's requirements. Yet, supplement critics have questioned product safety, efficacy and even the integrity of the industry.
But what is the story you haven't heard? Most major media outlets and don't talk about how well the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) has done to ensure the safety of supplements, and just how far some companies go to raise the bar on product safety and efficacy.
This documentary takes viewers through the history of DSHEA from the incredible passage to current controversies, such as new dietary ingredient (NDI) notifications, GMP (good manufacturing practice) implementation and FDA's enforcement-or lack thereof-of the law. It also explores mainstream media's coverage of DSHEA, ways supplement companies are going above and beyond the law's requirements, and the potential future of U.S. dietary supplement regulation.
