SAN ANSELMO, Calif. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued Ethical Naturals Inc. a patent (number US 7,959,963 B2) covering its method for manufacturing high-antioxidant extracts from grapes. Ethical Naturals uses this method to make its ORAC-15M extract, which can add scientifically defined levels of natural antioxidants and polyphenols to supplements and multivitamin type products. Its also GRAS (generally recognized as safe) affirmed and can used in beverages.

The patent, Method for producing grape extract with high ORAC value, and grape extract so produced," is for a process that broadly covers extracts from any part of the grape that exceed an ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) value of 10,000 µmol TE/gram. ORAC-15M contains an ORAC value of more than 15,000 µmol TE/gram, and also contains over 80 percent polyphenols, according to the company. Ethical Naturals noted the technology for manufacturing the extract also produces a final material that is highly soluble and potent, but  that still has a low taste and color profile.

The extract is also a key ingredient in Ethical Naturals multi-fruit extract, Standardized Fruit Blend (SFB®), manufactured from nine different exotic fruits, including: goji, bilberry, blueberry, chokeberry, cranberry, mangosteen, apple, pomegranate and grape.  SFB® is standardized to contain 40-percent polyphenols, and has an ORAC value of 7,500 µmol TE/gram. Its also GRAS affirmed.
