IADSA Predicts Positive Response to India FSSA Regs

BRUSSELSThe International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplements (IADSA) predicted India's newly implemented Food Standards and Safety Act (FSSA) will boost foreign investment in the sector now that health supplements are included in the country's food laws.

IADSA regulatory affairs manager Cashmer Dirampaten noted the benefits of FSSA  when speaking at the 7th Nutra India Summit in Bangalore, India, last March. Dirampaten said the act reinforced the country's commitment to food safety by requiring the establishment of science-based and product category specific regulations for food.

The FSSA now requires India's Food Standards Authority to develop well-defined regulations on novel food, genetically modified articles of food, irradiated food, organic foods, foods for special dietary uses, functional foods, nutraceuticals, health supplements and proprietary foods.

The IADSA is dedicated to the globalization of food supplement markets and increasing regulatory challenges within the industry. In March 2012, the Codex Committee for Food Additives (CCFA) agreed to recommend key additives used in supplements at levels defined by the IADSA.
