ELMWOOD PARK, N.J.Nutraceuticals International® LLC (NI) received a U.S. patent (No. 7,892,580), issued Feb. 22, 2011, covering the proprietary manufacturing of its FucoPure® fucoxanthin extract. The patent, Process for producing a stable concentrated dietary supplement and supplement produced thereby," covers the process of producing a concentrated form of fucoxanthin while reducing heavy metals and iodine content commonly found in Wakame seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida). While Wakame seaweed generally contains 0.01-percent fucoxanthin, the NI process results in 10.8 percent fucoxanthin content by weight.

NI noted fucoxanthin is thought to be a non-stimulant thermogenic, which works to initiate the breakdown of the fats accumulated by the bodys storing of unburned protein. Fucoxanthin extract has been reported to break apart the stored coupled proteins within the fat cell and effectively turn the stored fat back into protein to be used as energy.
