NNFA Holds Annual Lobby Day

WASHINGTONMore than 170 natural products industry members from 36states participated in the National Nutritional Foods Associations (NNFA)ninth annual lobbying event, Natural Foods Day, which was held April 4. NNFAmembers attended a morning briefing section on current regulatory and policyissues, attended pre-arranged meetings with congressional leaders and staffers,and enjoyed an evening reception honoring NNFAs seven CongressionalChampions.

Among the current issues on NNFAs agenda were support for H.R. 1545, whichwould ensure natural products receive similar tax treatment to pharmaceuticalsand over-the-counter (OTC) medications; support for S. 1546, a bill to allowdisadvantaged individuals to purchase dietary supplements with food stamps; andopposition to H.R. 3156, which would impose standards for supplements exceedingthose for drugs.

Seven legislators were recognized with the 2006 Congressional Championawards: Sens. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Orrin Hatch (RUtah); and Reps. Dan Burton (R-Ind.), Chris Cannon (R-Utah), Frank Pallone (D N.J.) and Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-Calif.).
