PISCATAWAY, N.J.—Sabinsa announced it was awarded a patent (No. 260,326) from the Mexican Patent Office covering the company’s process to make forskolin, a diterpene from Coleus forskolhii, water soluble; Singapore and South Africa have already issued patents to Sabinsa covering the technology. The new patent, “Process for preparing water-soluble diterpenes and their applications,” will be in effect through Sept. 2, 2024.

According to the company, making forskolin water soluble opens up a range of formulation possibilities. Lakshmi Prakash, Ph.D., vice president of innovation and business development, said: “Aqueous formulation facilitates the safe and effective use of forskolin as a natural ophthalmic drug in the management of glaucoma, as well as in dermatological and related applications. Consumer product formulations containing forskolin such as functional beverage formulations (targeting weight management support and lean body mass), and cosmetics, would also benefit from the capability of aqueous formulation.”
