PISCATAWAY, N.J. Sabinsa Corp. announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) upheld its U.S. patent No. 5,972,382, related to the uses of piperine extract; Sabinsa supplies a 98 percent pure piperine extract as BioPerine®. The company submitted the patent to the U.S. PTO for reexamination in 2004, hoping for reaffirmation of the patentability of BioPerine for increasing nutrient-induced thermogenesis and related nutritional uses.

The final U.S. PTO decision was welcomed by Sabinsas founder, Muhammed Majeed, Ph.D., whose research with his scientific team formed the basis upon which the patent was founded. We are pleased that the U.S. PTO has recognized Sabinsas pioneering work in the development of piperine for use in the nutritional supplement industry, he noted. Sabinsa continues to invest in research of BioPerine with the knowledge that its intellectual property rights in the product are strong, and we will continue to enforce our rights against those who violate the law by infringing our patents.
