Unigen Gains Patent For Blood Lipid Regulator

LACEY, Wash.UnigenPharmaceuticals Inc. (www.unigenpharma.com) received a patent from the U.S. Patent andTrademark Office for its proprietary policosanol ingredient. The ingredient,derived from a wax sourced from China, is designed to help maintain healthyblood lipid levels within the body without liver damage or other side effectslinked with cholesterol-lowering prescription drugs.

According to the company, the policosanol ingredient will bedeveloped into commercial products designed to help manage serum lipid levels.

Dr. Qi Jia, Unigens chief scientific officer andco-developer of the new policosanol ingredient, said, We developed this novelpolicosanol product from a sustainable natural source to address various healthconcerns, such as those related to unhealthy cholesterol levels, in a way thatis natural and effective. Dr. Jia added low harvest yield from naturalsources and the high cost of isolating and purifying policosanol have limitedits use in the past.
