USPlabs Destroys $8 Million in DMAA Supplements

WASHINGTONUSPlabs has voluntarily destroyed more than $8 million in dietary supplement products that contain the stimulant DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine), FDA announced Tuesday.

FDA disclosed USPlabs agreed to destroy OxyElite Pro and Jack3d after the agency administratively detained the products under authority that it was granted under the Food Safety Modernization Act.

The sports supplements have been marketed to help with workouts and burn fat.

Three months ago, the agency warned consumers that DMAA may raise heart pressure and cause cardiovascular problems. USPlabs responded to the consumer advisory by announcing plans to phase out DMAA products "for business reasons".

FDA has received 86 reports that link the substance to psychiatric disorders, heart problems, nervous system disorders and death.

FDA is continuing to advise consumers to stay away from DMAA-containing products.

Dallas-based USPlabs did not respond Tuesday to an emailed request for comment.

According to The New York Times, federal prosecutors last month asked federal judges in two states to authorize the seizure of more than 3,200 cases of DMAA products from GNC warehouses in Pittsburgh and Anderson, S.C.

GNC and USPlabs have maintained DMAA is safe.
