November 6, 2013
NOBLESVILLE, INLongvida® Optimized Curcumin, from Verdure Sciences, is the subject of new European patents covering its use in Alzheimer's and other aging-related diseases. The European patent Office (EPO) designated the patent (EP 1993365) in eight European countries including Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Spain and Switzerland.
The patent covers a method of treating Alzheimer's and other age-related diseases by administering "curcuminoid formulations having enhanced bioavailability are provided and comprise a curcuminoid, antioxidant, glucuronidation inhibitor, and water-soluble, pharmaceutically acceptable inhibitor."
According to Verdure, Longvida is made using patented Solid-Lipid Particle (SLP) Technology to increase bioavailability of curcumin in its free, non-metabolized form. The patent covers a Longvidas key innovation: the ability to provide actual free curcumin in the bloodstream," said Blake Ebersole, technical director for Verdure Sciences. Thus far, more than a dozen scientific studies have proven this technology fulfills the promise of curcumin for the brain and body."
Development of this ingredient was based on UCLA research funded by the Natioanal Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Veteran's Administration (VA). Most recently, Longvida was linked to improved cognitive function in healthy, older adult subjects, the company reported.
"This new patent marks a milestone for the Longvida brand," said Sonya Cropper, VP of marketing for Verdure Sciences. The Longvida brand continues to set industry standards for curcumin research, which we believe will support its success in Europe and worldwide."
