DHA-Enhanced Baby Food Enters Market
ST. LOUIS--Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp. announced on March 26 a new line of baby food containing docosahexaenoic acid(DHA), as well as arachidonic acid (AA). Each 4-ounce jar in the Beech-Nut® First Advantage line contains no less than 60 mg of DHA and 40 mg of AA, according to the company (www.beech-nut.com). "Breast milk is still the gold standard when it comes to infant nutrition and is still the best source ofDHA, although dependent on the mother's dietary intake of DHA," said Christine Wood, M.D., author of How to Get Kids to Eat Great & Love It (Griffin Publishing Group, 2001). "With the availability of DHA in baby food, we can ensure the intake of DHA as the baby transitions to solid foods to give the infant every advantage for optimal development. If the mother is no longer breastfeeding, these key nutrients are especially important."
