Fish Oil Supplements Cleaner than Fish

SIDNEY, British ColumbiaAXYSAnalytical Services Ltd. conducted studies on fish-oil capsules to determine PCB levelsand compared the results to expected PCB levels in fresh-farmed fish. Theindependent laboratory found all capsules (provided by 12 fish-oilmanufacturers) contained well below 1 nanogram/g of PCBs. By comparison, thecleanest piece of farmed fish contained as much PCB as 63 fish oil capsules.

Pronova Biocare, which was one supplier that contributedproduct for the study, noted many environmental toxins are fat-soluble and endup in fatty fish. At Pronova Biocare, crude fish oil is purified in severalsteps, some of which are patented processes unique to our products, said Morten Bryhn, M.D., Ph.D., director of research anddevelopment for Pronova (www.epax.biz).
