Martek DHA Designated Novel Ingredient in Europe

COLUMBIA, Md.On June 5, the Commission of the European Communitiesauthorized the use of Martek Biosciences Corp.s docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)for human consumption in Decision C(2003)1790. The commission stated MarteksDHArelating specifically to the DHA oil produced by the former OmegaTech,which was acquired by Martek in April 2003may be marketed in the Europeancommunity as a novel food ingredient. The designation authorizes the use ofMarteks DHA in foods such as certain dairy products (including cheese andyogurt but not milk-based drinks), spreads and dressings, breakfast cereals,food supplements and medical foods.
