MEG-3 Omega-3 Breads Hit Market

DARTMOUTH, Nova ScotiaOceanNutrition Canada Ltd. (ONC) announced its MEG-3® Omega-3 Eicosapentaenoic Acid(EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) fish oil ingredient has been incorporatedinto various omega-3 breads produced by Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans FoodMarkets Inc., Totowa, N.J.-based Arnold Foods Co. and The Baker, based inMilford, N.J.

Colin Barrow, Ph.D., ONCs vice president of research anddevelopment, said, Experts agree that people should be consuming between 500mg and 1,000 mg per day of EPA and DHA, and currently Americans consume lessthan 100 mg per day. In September 2004, the Food and Drug Association (FDA)approved a qualified heart health claim for food products containing EPA/DHA, asfound in fish oil, confirming that these are the important forms of omega-3fatty acids for heart health.
