Ocean Nutrition Launches MEG-3 Brand, Web Site

HALIFAX, Nova ScotiaOceanNutrition Canada Ltd. (ONC) introduced a flagship brand, MEG-3, for its fishoil ingredients. The line includes a GRAS (generally recognized as safe)powdered omega-3 food ingredient and standard and concentrated offerings ofeicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

ONCs MEG-3 products are verified through the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) for adhering to established qualitystandards. The tagline for the MEG-3 brand is Trust The Source.

ONC also launched a Web site (www.meg-3.com) for consumers tolearn more about the health benefits of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs).The launch came immediately after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)announced allowance of a cardiovascular health claim for foods incorporating EPAand DHA into their products. ONC completed a market research study on 200 womenwho were not users of dietary supplements and found high awareness of the termomega-3, but limited understanding of the health benefits of omega-3s. Whenconsumer messages were tested in association with the MEG-3 brand, intent topurchase rose to 87 percent.

Consumers are aware that fish is healthy and that omega-3is good for them, yet they do not fully understand why, said Ian Lucas, vicepresident of marketing at ONC. When the right messages are presented in acommon sense manner, through our MEG-3 brand, people will learn the healthbenefits of omega-3 and understand the importance of regular daily consumptionof EPA/DHA for their families. The result is a dramatic change in attitudetoward intent to purchase.
