ONC Introduces New Omega-3- Enriched Yogurt

DARTMOUTH, Nova ScotiaOceanNutrition Canada Ltd. (ONC) launched Woodstock Water Buffalo Yogurt, a lineof yogurt fortified with the companys MEG-3 microencapsulated fish oilingredient, at Natural Products Expo East in September. The new line isformulated with buffalo milk, probiotics and omega-3 essential fatty acids(EFAs) including 100 mg/serving of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 170 g/servingdocosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

The company also launched Farmers Choice Partly SkimmedMilk, also fortified with the MEG-3 ingredient, in Canada.

Colin Barrow, Ph.D., vice president of research anddevelopment at ONC, said, Experts, including the American Heart Association,agree that people should consume between 500 and 1,000 mg/d of EPA and DHA, andcurrently Americans consume less than 100 mg/d. In September 2004, the U.S. Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) approved a qualified heart health claim for foodproducts containing EPA/DHA, as found in fish oil, confirming that these are theimportant forms of omega-3 fatty acids for heart health.
