Vitamin E May Check PUFA Damage
SCOTLAND--In a recent study, consumption of supplemental vitamin E may combat damagecaused by polyunsaturated fats (PUFA). PUFAs, which have been proven to reduce the risk ofheart disease, are susceptible to free radicals that can damage DNA.
Researchers at the Rowett Research Institute in Scotland asked 21 men to eat either alow-PUFA (five percent) diet or a high PUFA (15 percent) diet. The men supplemented theirdiets with seven to 10 IU of dietary vitamin E or else with 110 IU of vitamin Esupplements. DNA damage increased with the higher intake of dietary PUFAs and vitamin Ewas shown to repair the destruction. For additional information, contact the RowettResearch Institute at [email protected].
