LAUREL, Md.An article In the November/December 2012 issue of American Pharmaceutical Review discusses near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a quick and accurate method to identify raw material. FOSS NIRSystems contributed the article, entitled "Discriminant Analysis of Raw Materials Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy."

In the study, researchers used the company's newly released NIRS DS2500 discriminate four sugars: lactose anhydrous, lactose monohydrate, mannitol and sorbitol. The testing follows guidelines for FDA Process Analytical Technology (PAT) initiatives, and, at 15 seconds per sample, offers a fast testing method. NIR methods do not require sample preparation or hazardous chemicals, potentially reducing lab workload and costs.
