LOS ANGELES Herbalife Ltd., a global nutrition company, has completed an agreement to purchase a manufacturing facility in North Carolina.

Los Angeles-based Herbalife said the acquisition expands its global manufacturing capacity, aligning with its strategy to boost self-manufacturing for its top products.

Herbalife anticipates investing more than $100 million in the facility in Winston-Salem over the next two years, commencing production in the plant as early as June 2014. The company plans to invest on machinery and technology and completely retrofit the plant so it complies with GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices) for dietary supplements and food products.

The deal is good news for the local economy since Herbalife estimates hiring roughly 500 people by the time the facility scales up to full operations.
