SALT LAKE CITYSabinsa Corp. was fined $11,375 by Utah regulators on June 10 for 15 violations of safety procedures, the Associated Press (AP) reported. According to inspection reports obtained by AP, inspectors found Sabinsa left workers exposed to ambient dust. Violations cited by Utahs Occupation Safety and Health Administration included paperwork lapses, electrical hazards and lack of employee training on the use of forklifts and respirators, including dust-control violations that AP stated appeared to have contributed to the death of a 29-year-old employee.

Sabinsa issued a statement on the situation, noting Utahs OSHA did not find a causal link between any of the citations and the employee death, which would have been specifically noted in the citation had it existed. Sabinsas statement noted: The tenor of the citations was such that it would be inaccurate to construe that Sabinsa has an unsafe working environment. Our company trains employees in safe practices and has signed documents for policies and procedures to ensure their safety. Further, the June 10 document is a listing of citations, not a final report, and Sabinsa can contest the citations or see the fines reduced by correcting the concerns. The company added, [We] have already taken corrective measures and, as always, are committed to the safety of our employees and the quality of our products.
