Study Shows Tocotrienols Improve Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
A new study found that the daily intake of tocotrienols (Tocomin SupraBio by Carotech, Inc.) improved non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in human.

A human clinical study showed supplementation with bioenhanced natural full spectrum palm tocotrienol complex (Tocomin SupraBio by Carotech, Inc.) at 400 mg daily for one year improved fatty liver in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (Nutr J. 2013 Dec 27;12(1):166).
The study, conducted at the University Science Malaysia, Penang, used 87 untreated hyperscholesterolemic adults diagnosed with NAFLD by ultrasound. Participants were randomly put in two groups: the control group of 44 participants taking a placebo and the tocotrienols group of 43 participants, taking 200 mg, twice a day, of tocotrienols softegels (Tocomin SupraBio). All participants underwent fasting blood chemistry analyses at quarterly intervals and high sensitivity B-mode ultrasonography (USG) examinations at the beginning and end of the study.
A total of 64 participants completed the year-long study34 from the control group and 30 from the tocotrienols group. Liver ultrasounds showed normalized echogenic response in 50 percent of the tocotrienols group and 23.5 percent in the placebo group. The normalization of hepatic echogenic response was significantly higher for the tocotrienols treated group compared to the placebo group.
In addition to the results, there was a significant rate of remission. Two participants in the placebo group reported worsening of NAFLD grade, but none in the group treated with tocotrienols. No adverse events were reported for either group.
Another group of researchers from the Philippines recently showed that lifestyle modification and exercise together with supplementation of 100 mg of tocotrienols for three months is nearly four times more effective in improving liver stiffness in NAFLD patients, compared to lifestyle modification and exercise alone.
Researchers in Japan found that the simultaneous intake of tocotrienols with alphatocopherol inhibited lipid accumulation, inflammation and fibrosis in the liver of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis rates.
More and more studies are focusing on the protective benefits of bioenhanced natural full spectrum tocotrienol complex (Tocomin SupraBio®) for the fatty liver. These studies provide evidence that supplementation of Tocomin SupraBio® leads to improved liver condition in end-stage liver disease and reduced liver stiffness in NAFLD patients. In this most recently published human study, remission of NAFLD was seen in patients after one year of supplementation, said WH Leong, vice president of Carotech, Inc.
