Chr. Hansen Expands U.S. Culture Facility

MILWAUKEEChr. Hansen (www.chr-hansen.com) is nearing completion ofa $7.4 million upgrade to its culture plant here. The expansion will increasefermentation capacity by 35 percent and complete a five-year investment plan of$25 million.

Specific additions to the plant include a 30,000-liter fermentor, with roomto add another in the future, a second UHT (Ultra High Temperature) sterilizerand larger separators with automatic cryoprotection equipment. In addition,freeze-drying and packaging capacities are being upgraded to support and meetthe extra capacity of the fermentation area.

Our international company, headquartered in Denmark, has made anextraordinary commitment to the U.S. marketplace where were already anindustry leader, said David Carpenter, president and chief executive officer(CEO). This expansion will allow Chr. Hansen to offer customers a more highlytechnical production process and enhanced product development so we will be ableto produce more and different products.We intend to introduce second generationsof several of our popular products such as Easy-Set, as well as moreinnovations in probiotics.
