Coke Acquires Functional Drink Company

ATLANTA--Coca Cola Co. announced today that it acquired Greenwich, Conn.-based Mad River Traders Inc., a manufacturer of all natural sodas and "functional" teas and juices. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Mad River Traders began in 1989 by Marc Johnson with five sodas. As of 2000, Mad River Traders' products were sold in 28 states (mainly in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northwest) and four countries. According to the company's Web site, a 1998 episode of Dateline NBC featured Mad River Traders as a leader in the gourmet soda category.
