Even though we find ourselves in perhaps the worst economic recession in many years, food companies continue to invest in ethical initiatives aligned with ingredient sourcing, the environment, social consciousness, the Financial Times reported.

Examples of this in the food industry include multi-million-dollar efforts by Mars, Inc. to source cocoa from sustainable farms. A spokesperson from the company notes that consumers would be unforgiving if we cut our quality at a time when were under economic pressure and that sustainable sourcing is here to stay.

Other companies with notable efforts in the area of ethical foods include McDonalds Corporation, Starbucks and Tate & Lyle.
