BETHESDA, Md.--Jane Kinsel, Ph.D., M.B.A., was appointed associate director for Science Policy and Operations within the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), and Martin Goldrosen, Ph.D., was appointed chief of the Office of Scientific Review.

In her new role at NCCAM, a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Kinsel will serve as senior advisor on science, science policy and other strategic issues, as well as oversee the planning for and evaluation of scientific initiatives and operating programs. Kinsel replaced Dr. Richard Nahin as executive secretary of the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, which serves as an advisory council to NCCAM (http://nccam.nih.gov).

"Dr. Kinsel brings extraordinary scientific, strategic and managerial expertise to her new position," said Stephen E. Straus, M.D., NCCAM Director. "I am confident that she will greatly enhance the Center's capacity to navigate thoughtfully through the many challenges and opportunities of research in [complementary and alternative medicine] (CAM)."

Goldrosen will be responsible for the peer review of all grant applications assigned to NCCAM. Goldrosen's duties include planning, leading and directing the activities of scientists and technical support personnel to ensure quality, objectivity and accountability in the grants and contracts peer review process. He will also direct and coordinate activities to evaluate NCCAM's grant review processes and allocation of resources.

"Dr. Goldrosen is an outstanding scientist-manager who brings a wealth of knowledge to NCCAM," Straus said. "His background as a superb and well-funded investigator, and his proven expertise in the review of basic and applied research applications will prove invaluable to the Center's mission."
