August 5, 2003
BOCA RATON, Fla.--On July 31, Rexall Sundown reported it would be laying off 332 employees between July 2003 and March 2004, reportedly to reduce duplicate jobs between the two companies. The notice was posted on Florida's Agency for Workforce Innovation Web site (www.floridajobs.org) as part of the '88 law requiring companies give at least 60 days notice to workers regarding layoffs. According to The Palm Beach Post (www.gopbi.com/partners/pbpost), 50 mid-level and upper-level managers were laid off on July 25, the same day NBTY Inc. reported completing its $250 million acquisition of the company from The Netherlands-based Royal Numico NV. Rexall Sundown's Florida locations in Boca Raton and Deerfield Beach had approximately 1,000 employees pre-layoffs.
