SALT LAKE CITY—For its 16th consecutive quarter, USANA Health Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ:USNA) posted record net sales, hitting $93.9 million, a 14.5-percent increase over the same quarter last year. Management attributed the second quarter net sales growth primarily to a 13.6-percent increase in the number of Active Associates, who serve as independent distributors.

“We are pleased with our strong sales results, which continue to be driven by our consistent growth of Active Associates,” said Dave Wentz, president of USANA (www.usanahealthsciences.com). “In North America, second quarter sales grew by 19 percent, compared with last year.We believe this growth in our most mature region reflects the continued interest in our products and the business opportunity that USANA offers its associates.” He further noted the engagement and effort of the associate leaders in North America has been one of the driving forces behind the company’s recent success. “Additionally, interest in our low-glycemic, macro optimizer products remained strong and was a growth driver in the second quarter, as this product group reached 14.1 percent of product sales.”

On the strength of sales, operating earnings grew 14.1 percent to $15.4 million, compared to a year ago. However, operating income was off $1.2 million, due to the expensing of equity-based compensation. In the end, net income increased 8.4 percent to $10.3 million or $0.55 per share.
