Mediterranean diets may be effective in chronic disease prevention, new studies at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology of the University of Granada found. Experts said that the diet, in conjunction with exercise and other healthy habits, may prevent 80% of the incidence of cardiovascular disease and 40% of the incidence of different types of cancer. In the study, scientists looked at the influence of the ingredients of the Mediterranean diet on a cell line on pancreatic cancer cells. Scientists manipulated the composition of the cell membrane, providing olive oil, fish oil or an antioxidant typical of olive oil, and analyzed how such cells defend themselves from the aggressions which cause pancreatic alterations. Study conclusions suggested that “feeding and changes in membrane composition affect cell function and can therefore influence the prevention of certain diseases.”
