Cosucra Invests 30M to Expand Pea Protein Production

WARCOING, BelgiumIn response to growing interest in plant-based protein, Cosucra is investing 30 million in its Belgian pea protein production unit. The investment will expand production capacity for its Pisane® product by creating a second pea protein refining line.

The expansion of its Warcoing production site will begin later this year and is expected to be operational in 2015. Plans include construction of a second drying tower and an additional packaging linereinforcing the company's corporate strategy and mission.

Cosucra commercial director Michel Dewael said the plant protein market is constantly growing, with an estimated volume of 1.6 million tons produced in 2011. The growing interest in this type of protein is related to an increased awareness among customers about healthier food prepared with ingredients that come from local and sustainable farming," he added.

In a soy protein-dominated market, pea protein is recording rapid growth, especially in North America and Europe. Asian markets are burgeoning as they look for non-allergenic options. According to Cosucra, the company is benefiting from an annual growth of more than 20% with its Pisane® sales in sports, medical nutrition, seniors, vegetarians and diet nutrition markets.
