Antioxidant Supplements, High-Carotenoid Diet Improve AdultHealth

SALT LAKE CITY--Both moderate antioxidant supplementation and adiet high in carotenoids can elevate serum carotenoid and antioxidant levels inolder adults, according to researchers at the University of Utah who published apaper in the October issue of the Journal of Nutrition (133, 10:3117-23,2003) (www.nutrition.org).

For five weeks, 60 elderly subjects were randomly assigned to receive anantioxidant capsule, antioxidant tablet, a high carotenoid diet or placebo.Serum levels of the supplemented carotenoids and alpha-tocopherol were higherafter the study in all treatment groups compared to placebo. In addition, thediet and antioxidant capsule groups exhibited lower levels of some oxidativestress biomarkers after the study compared to baseline levels.
