AOAC Approves Glucosamine HCL Testing Method

GAITHERSBURG, Md.--AOAC International's Methods Committee on DietarySupplements unanimously approved a glucosamine hydrochloride test method,submitted by NOW® Foods, as a First Action Official Method following a two-yearvalidation process. "Determination of Glucosamine in Raw Materials andDietary Supplements Containing Glucosamine Sulfate and/or GlucosamineHydrochloride by HPLC with FMOC-Su Derivatization as an AOAC First ActionOfficial Method" will be designated AOAC Method 2005.01 and published inthe AOAC Journal.

The two key NOW scientists who developed the testing methodology are JosephZhou, Ph.D., director of lab methods and scientific support, and Ted Waszkuc,Ph.D., method scientist; Zhou was previously the AOAC Study Director for theglucosamine method collaborative study, which involved 12 collaboratinglaboratories; 10 in the United States, one in Canada and one in Germany.
