SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass.AOAC  International approved the ORAC method as a First Action Official Method for measuring antioxidants in foods.

Jointly developed by Brunswick Laboratories and USDA, the ORAC method provides information on the analytical range and limits of detection (LOD). The method applies to several different foods, and other advantages include simple extraction, use of common instruments and testing done on high levels.

Jin Ji, Ph.D., chief technology officer and vice president of Brunswick Labs, said, "ORAC and ORAC5.0, the ORAC assay panel that measures antioxidant capacity against five reactive oxygen species, were developed to help quantify antioxidant capacity of food and nutraceutical ingredients."

She added Brunswick Labs' cellular antioxidant assay (CAA) further evaluates antioxidant bioefficacy of nutraceutical ingredients in biological systems. ORAC can obtain valuable information about foods and other antioxidant sources, especially when used with complementary investigative  methods such as CAA.
