Boysenberry, Black Currant Protect DNA

AUCKLAND, New ZealandAnthocyanins and other phenolics present inboysenberries and black currants protect cellular DNA against oxidative damage,according to new research out of New Zealand (J Sci Food Agric, 86,5:678-86, 2006). Researchers from The Horticulture and Food Research Instituteof New Zealand Ltd. administered extracts of boysenberry and black currantwithin the normal human physiological range to a HL-60 human promyelocytic cellline exposed to hydrogen peroxide. Boysenberryand particularly black currantpolyphenolssignificantly inhibited the increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS) and protected DNA of human neuroblastoma cells against H2O2-inducedoxidative damage.
