Canadian Approval of Erythritol Creates New Market For Cargill

MINNEAPOLIS & WINNIPEG, ManitobaCargillannounced the Canadian governments approval of erythritol for certain foodapplications has opened another market for the companys Eridex erythritol,a no-calorie, natural bulk sweetener. The regulatory approval was granted byHealth Canada and published in the Dec. 15, 2004 edition of CanadaGazette, Part II (http://canadagazette.gc.ca).

The Canadian government approved six uses for erythritol infood. Health Canada established safe-use levels for the sweetener inlow- or reduced-calorie beverages, dietetic cookies, soft candies (includingchocolate), hard candies, chewing gum and tabletop sweeteners.

Erythritol has been approved for food applications in morethan a dozen countries, including the United States, Mexico, Japan andAustralia.
