Lawyers Claim Stevia Is a Drug

WASHINGTON–A petition claiming “Stevia is a drug” has been sent to the Food and Drug Administration by the Washington, D.C. law firm Coburn & Coffman PLLC, Food Navigator reported. The petition claims that “stevia glycosides (SGs) are drugs and therefore cannot be legally added to conventional foods,” based on research into the sweetener's effects on health.
