Monsanto Studying Wild Soy Genes for GE Benefits

ST. LOUIS--Monsanto researchers developed a technology todiscover genetic information from wild soybean varieties that might increaseyield or make other improvements to commercial soybean crops throughbioengineering. "Our new technology aimed at improving the productivity ofcommercial soybeans should lead to new and enhanced products that benefitfarmers throughout the world," said Xavier Delannay, director of discoveryfor Monsanto's Molecular Breeding Group. Monsanto (www.monsanto.com)is applying for a patent for the technology in the United States, but thecompany reported that researchers around the world would be allowed to apply thetechnology to soybeans and other crops.
