WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.In a new report, ConsumerLab.com (CL) compared 13 different supplements for lycopene, the carotenoid responsible for tomatoes' red pigment. The independent company tested eight products for labeled amount, purity and ability to break apart for absorption. Five supplements passed based on CL's voluntary certification program.

Of the supplements studied, only one failed the quality testing and review. CL found the supplement did not fully break apart within the 30-minute allotment. The product also contained only 42 percent of the 15 mg of lycopene it claimed per tablet.

According to CL's computations, the average cost of 10 mg of lycopene is 55 cents, with the cheapest dose costing 10 cents.

In 2012, the independent company reviewed omega-3, green coffee bean, milk thistle, fish oil and caffeine supplements and products.
