Novozymes Enjoys Enzyme Growth

BAGSVAERD, DenmarkNovozymes A/S reported May 7 that for its firstquarter (1Q03) sales rose, as did profits, thanks to increases in most enzymesectors. Sales rose by 10 percent to DKK 1.4 million from DKK 1.3 million loggedin 1Q02. Net profit rose 42 percent to DKK 183 million from DKK 129 million.

On the enzyme side, sales of technical enzymes increased by 5 percent,although lower exchange rates reduced growth significantly. Sales of detergentenzymes were down 1 percent. Food enzyme sales rose by 9 percent, but take-homeearnings were reduced due to lower exchange rates, especially in relation to theU.S. dollar. Sales growth was also seen in the baking industry, while beverageenzyme sales were negatively affected by lower production in Europe and theUnited States. Feed enzymes grew by 33 percent, and the companys market forphytase products continued to expand, boosted by Novozymes alliance withRoche Vitamins. In 2003, the company expects to launch five to seven new enzymeproducts.
