Study To Examine Whether Astaxanthin Lowers Cholesterol

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii--The Cyanotech Corp. (www.cyanotech.com), based here, has begun a new clinical trial measuring the efficacy of astaxanthin for reducing LDL ("bad") cholesterol and increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol. This will be a double blind, placebo-controlled study using 44 subjects; the research will be led by Gene Spiller, Ph.D., from the Health Research Studies Center in Los Altos, Calif. The product used in the study is Cyanotech's BioAstin®, a proprietary formulation of the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis; the study will be co-sponsored by the company's marketing partner in Japan, Kyowa Engineering Co.
