Sunscreen Better Than Beta-Carotene

QUEENSLAND, Australia--Scientists from theUniversity of Queensland reported beta-carotene supplementation had no effect onskin tumor incidence. In a study appearing in the April edition of the Archivesof Dermatology (139, 4:451-5, 2003) (http://archderm.ama-assn.org),researchers used a total of 1,621 adults aged 25 to 74 years old. The incidenceof skin tumors was lower in people randomized to daily sunscreen use than inthose randomized to discretionary sunscreen use. Beta-carotene had no effect onthe rate of skin tumors relative to those taking placebo tablets.
