Women Taking Supplement Report Improved Sexual Function

HONOLULU--A dietary supplement containing extracts of ginseng, ginkgo, damiana andL-arginine improved the sex drive of 73.5 percent of female participants compared to 37.2 percent of the placebo group, according to a study published in the Oct./Dec. issue of Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy (27:541-9, 2001). Researchers, led byT.Y. Ito at the University of Hawaii, followed 77 women over the age of 21 who were interested in improving their sex drive. Thirty-four women received the supplement and 43 receiving placebo. After four weeks, 73.5 percent of the women taking the supplement reported improved satisfaction with their overall sex life, including improvements in sexual desire, reduction of vaginal dryness, and increased frequency of sexual intercourse and orgasm.
